(RED)TM is a great idea, but fails in execution!

I've READ that if you added up all the marketing money (product development, advertising, legal work, etc.) spent on (RED) products, then compared it to the total dollars donated by the companies [when consumers buy a (RED)tm product] ...that it actually would be worth more to those in need to STOP the (RED)tm cause and just have companies right checks to the cause... which as a marketer kmyself knows will never happen for 10,000 reasons.     

Anyone have any evidence of this?  What do you think (comment below)...

(RED) is getting tons of free PR every time a big company signs on... but even in the case of Startbucks (which I love & drink) - made me think--- couldn't  they do more, and simply offer $0.25 per cup of that $5.00 coffee to needy local families if you used (brought in) your own cup instead of using their cardboard cups...

Yeah yeah, I know I get $0.10 off - but why not more, and why not donate it to someone - after all, if I can afford $5.00 coffee (which I really can't) what's $0.10 doing for me or my day?... just some more things to think about over a good cup of Joe (the plumber?)--no that was last week's story; I digress.

– Starbucks Coffee Company (NASDAQ: SBUX) and (RED)™ today announced a multi-year partnership that will give coffee lovers a chance to do good every day. Through the partnership, launched as part of the Starbucks™ Shared Planet™ commitment to communities, a portion of the proceeds from special STARBUCKS (PRODUCT) RED products will go to the Global Fund to help save lives in Africa, a key coffee growing region for Starbucks.

Starting on November 27, 2008 and continuing through January 2, 2009, Starbucks will contribute five cents from the sale of any (STARBUCKS) RED EXCLUSIVE beverage* at all company-owned and licensed stores in the United States and Canada to the Global Fund to invest in AIDS programs in Africa.

I know - nickels add up to millions, but seems kind of 'governmenty way to rais money'...

Sorry Starbucks - glad you joined, and I won't stop drinking your coffee when I can afford it, but please give me a check box that I can donate $0.10 savings for using my own cofee cup to the charity of my choice.   Now that's a million dollar idea that costs nothing to implement - put a jar on the counter, pull $0.10 out of your drawer when you fill Chris' cup, and watch the money grow.... why?  Because others will see the jar fill in front of them - not behind some corporate accounting (RED)tm PR campaign that is really about FREE publicity, and advertising value, than the local people in need of food, heat, and other daily things...

Disclaimer:  I buy (RED)tm products when I can -simply b/c it doesn't cost any more to do so... and encourage you to also.  Just because it's broken, doesn't mean the people a program helps should be ignored.  Thanks (RED)tm!
